Arrive on Ukerewe Island with a scenic crossing of the Rugezi Channel through Bunda to Ngoma. You’ll be warmly welcomed by Dickson Magomba, Cultural Coordinator and guide at the Ukerewe Cultural Tourism Enterprise. Settle into the peaceful rhythm of island life with an overnight stay at Bwiru Village Homestay, where local hospitality and lakeside serenity await.
After an early breakfast, begin your exploration in Bukindo Village, where historic drums once carried messages across the kingdom and royal artefacts—spears and the King’s chair—tell stories of governance before Independence.
In Kitare, visit the resting place of Ukerewe’s chiefs, including Michael Lukumbuzya, the last King who later served as Tanzania’s ambassador to Canada. Climb Murutanga Hill, the island’s highest point, for sweeping views across Lake Victoria.
Continue to Irondo Village for coconut groves, panoramic island vistas, birdlife, and glimpses of local fisherfolk at work—an authentic immersion into daily life on the lake.
In Kagunguli, discover a century-old church still in use, the island’s first primary school and dispensary, and the graves of King Gabriel Ruhumbika and Anicet Kitereza, historian and translator of the Kerewe Bible.
Return to Bwiru for lunch before boarding the 2:00 PM ferry to Mwanza—carrying with you the stories, landscapes, and spirit of Ukerewe Island.
