Today (5th June 2018), marked United Nations World Environment Day. This year’s theme is “beat plastic pollution”, and our employees based in Bukoba spent time on the beaches of Lake Victoria collecting plastic waste which had washed up or been left on its shores.
U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres has urged all people to reject single-use plastic items, and warned that growing levels of plastic waste was becoming unmanageable – “every year, more than eight million tons end up in the oceans.” With our country having a shore line on the Indian Ocean, as well as being home to spectacular lakes and rivers which are essential to our people and the wildlife of Tanzania, we are committed to doing everything we can in ridding plastic waste from our country.
We are proud to support this important global initiative, today and into the future.
