Lake Victoria is the largest of Africa’s Great Lakes and the largest tropical lake in the world. It is home to over 400 species of birds to thrill and excite both keen ornithologists and nature lovers. Vistors can view a wide variety of birds on any one day including Malabou storks, Kites, Kingfishers, Bee-Eaters, Weavers and Swallows.

Its importance for biodiversity is highlighted by the fact that there are 17 important bird and biodiversity areas directly connected to the lake system, and more in the wider Lake Victoria Basin.

The lake supports Africa’s largest inland fishery, and its resources and ecosystem help sustain not only the birdlife but the livelihoods of communities across the region

MEET OUR BIRDING EXPERT, MUGASHE

Mugashe was born in Bukoba and his deep knowledge about this local environment (flora and fauna) is gained from over 40 years guiding across the Lake Zone. He honed his skills as a young man in the world renouned Lake Manyara National Park - being the chosen tour guide to introduce the wildlife of the area to a then young american senator who later became the President of the United States, Barrick Obama!

A natural teacher, Mugashe moved on to work in the world famous Serengeti National Park where he translated knowledge about the park to both the local community (swahili) and international organisations (e.g. World Vision, German) helping develop their understanding and appreciation of this sanctury. He returned to his home town of Bukoba in later years, and today works as a school teacher spending any free time he has birding on the shore of the lake. We are honoured to have him to call upon for our birding experiences!

PACKAGE DETAILS

MORNING TOUR

We will meet you early morning on the Lake Victoria beach (next to Kiroyera Tours office) for an introductory briefing before setting off on an insightful walk along the shore of the lake to learn about the spectacular birds who call the lake home. You can stay in a traditional banda on the beach if you want to experience birdlife at dawn and dusk (optional cost).

AFTERNOON TOUR

We will meet early afternoon at the Lake Victoria beach cafe (you can enjoy a delicious lunch first!), next to Kiroyera Tours office. After an introductory briefing we will set off on a insightful walk along the shorse of the lake learning about the spectacular birds we meet along the way.
